We want you to come to Flint for #UES2016. Seriously.

You have questions about Urban Entrepreneurship Symposium 2016 (#UES2016). We have answers.

Q: What is the Urban Entrepreneurship Symposium?

A: The Urban Entrepreneurship Symposium is a one-of-a-kind conference that assembles entrepreneurs, aspiring entrepreneurs, and their allies from academia, government, and community organizations. We explore ways to apply community engagement, design thinking, technology, and business formation to create amazing new companies that produce healthy profits and positive social impact.Ā The ultimate objective is to promote for-profit business innovation that improves the quality of life in urban communities.

Q: What will happen at the Symposium?

A: This year, for the first time, the Symposium will span three days. During this time, participants will have access to a wide array of people, from grass roots community organizers to nationally and internationally recognized experts. The sessions promise to be highly informative and highly interactive. Ever been to a “Social Impact Sector Smackdown?” We’ve got that! We’ll have lively panel discussions, expert presentations, terrific and timely seminars, and great food and entertainment. Think of a South-by-Southwest-style conference that has an urban focus and is located in Flint. Get the idea? Yes, we’re ambitious šŸ™‚

Q: Why should I attend? What’s in it for me?

A: This conference will give you a new perspective on entrepreneurship, a perspective that will be useful no matter what kind of business you intend to start. Even if your community of interest is not Flint, the lessons and challenges from Flint make for a powerful case study. To paraphrase the words of Old Blue Eyes, “If you can fix it there, you’ll fix it anywhere!” You’ll learn a lot in a short period of time, you’ll connect with some really interesting folks, and you’ll have a great time. Isn’t that what life’s all about?

Q: Okay, I want to come, but is it safe in Flint? What about the water?

A: You will be amazed by the great venues we have chosen in downtown Flint and at Mott Community College. Yes, you will be safe. And while the tap water at all of our venues is perfectly fine, we will be serving bottled water to all conference attendees, just to guarantee peace-of-mind. The hotels we are recommending are on the outskirts of Flint, in a location that was never affected by the water crisis. Not to worry.
